EXHIBITED：20 Jun – 12 Jul 1997，8+8-1：Selected Paintings by 15 Contemporary Artists，Schoeni Art Gallery，Hong Kong1998，8+8-1：Selected Paintings by 15 Contemporary Artists，Connaught Brown Gallery，LondonThis work is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity issued by Schoeni Art Gallery，Hong KongFamily Portrait of Wang JinsongWang Jinsong was graduated from the Department of Ink Paintings at the Academy of Fine Arts in Zhejiang Province in 1987.Since 1990s，he has been using oil painting as his main art language，and has held the “New Image Art Exhibition—Song Yonghong & Wang Jinsong Double Solo Exhibition” at Contemporary Art Museum Beijing in 1990.He attended the “8+8-1：Selected Oil Paintings of 15 Contemporary Artists” exhibition organized by Schoeni Gallery Hong Kong in 1997.In the next year，he attended the “Inside Out：New Chinese Art” exhibitions，and later further exhibited his artworks in the United States，Mexico，Australia and so on，making him an important member of the Cynical Realism trend after Fang Lijun and Liu Wei.In 1996，Wang Jinsong began to record life of “the only child” in Chinese families and created the “One Child Policy Series” oil paintings，which feature families of three.Wang uses traditional image model and artistic presentation that conveys a strong sense of the era，to reproduce the lifestyle of Chinese families in a certain period of time.The pair from the “One Child Policy Series” on sale was created in 1996.They are important representatives of this series.The artist selects the scene of “taking memorial pictures” of ordinary Chinese families，with “slightly modified” clothing，with “serious and decent” poses and a typical “cozy” setting，and has truthfully represented the traditional life of the ordinary Chinese people.The painter deliberately conceives an unfinished transparent effect for the portrait of the parents or the child，and leaves the face of the parents or the child blank，creating a sense of ridiculousness of Surrealism.The painter employs an “observational” perspective as a “by-stander”，evoking people to reflect on social reality.
